But it was music that helped me discover that I am stronger than those that mistakenly thought that hope could be killed with a gun. For me and others of my generation, art became more than just a haven, it was a powerful way to conquer fear and to transform our feelings of impotence into creative impulse – that was the origin of Mi Sangre….”

“Juanes' Mi Sangre Foundation helps children, adolescents, and youths become key players in the construction of a peaceful Colombia. “The lyrics of my first songs were written in times of violent bombings and under the harassment of those who believe in the illusion of making easy money.

“Rock 'n' roll autobiographies and memoirs have become a growth industry lately, with the likes of Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Rod Stewart et al. spilling their tales of vinyl glory in print. But none of these former enfants terrible turned belle lettrists managed to accomplish what Juanes will do when the Colombian pop-rock superstar issues his own first-person life's account, simultaneously in Spanish and English, on April 2.

Juanes' tome, titled "Persiguiendo el sol" or "Chasing the Sun," chronicles the challenges of his youth and his entry into the music world …and devoting a considerable share of his time and money to assisting impoverished Colombian youth and other causes…Juanes writes about the violence and corruption that scarred his native city of Medellín; how his struggles with his faith led him to redefine his relationship with God; and how he reinvented himself artistically and reaffirmed his commitment to his family.” – Los Angeles Times

In "Chasing the Sun" Juanes addresses moments in his life known to all and others not so well-known … delving into the feelings that ran through each of those moments with great honesty and telling how getting to the top was taking a toll on his family and spiritual life. …He talks about times when he touched bottom, when the exhaustion of years living on the road practically drained his energy and creativity ..and finally regaining control of his life and time with his family” – Associated Press (translated)

“Juanes is an Ambassador of Peace - One of the most successful Latin American music artists has decided to reinvent himself - he will not change his music or style but rather his attitude toward life and his career. …with an internal peace that he longed for… this rocker that carries music in his blood has decided to roll-up his black t-shirt sleeves and write a book…. the drug violence of 80’s Medellin touched him closely…To escape the pain, the young Juanes took refuge in music …[this is the story of the] journey that made him the most successful Latin Rock artist, his music heard around the world and earning him 21 Grammy Awards. Although the trip was not without stumbling, Juanes ensures us that what made him remain strong during the most difficult moments was his faith” – Maria Elena Salinas on Univision’s ‘Aqui y Ahora’ (translated)

“Touching stories about his beginnings, what influenced his music, the burden of fame, his relations with God and even the death of his father - Juanes' first book is an intimate door to his life.” - EFE

- Juanes is a godsend to Latin music. Over his storied career, the Colombian singer/songwriter has won 21 Grammys and Latin Grammys, sold more than 15 million albums and established the Mi Sangre Foundation, which aids vulnerable Colombian youth. Yet while he pours his soul into his music, the rockero has drawn a zone of privacy around his personal life . . . until now. In Chasing the Sun, Juanes writes about how his discovery of heavy metal music helped soothe his fears as a teenager growing up in the middle of a drug war in his native country and how that bloodshed influenced his sociopolitical songs” - LATINA

Maria Elena Salinas Also Takes ABC News Viewers On A Look Inside Juanes’Home Recording Studio

English- and Spanish-language editions of the heavily anticipated and visually arresting photo-throughout, full color memoir—entitled Chasing the Sun and Persiguiendo el solrespectively—will be released simultaneously.

In Chasing the Sun, Juanes personally penned intimate details about his life and provides a number of stunning images, including some never-before-seen personal photographs. The Latin music superstar reveals aspects of his professional life - including his early musical influences, the creation and disbanding of Colombia’s leading hard rock band Ekhymosis, the start of his solo career and the global commercial success that followed, and the challenges and consequences of increased fame. Juanes also opens up about his personal life: the effects of witnessing corruption and violence in his hometown of Medellin, Colombia at a young age; his regret and remorse surrounding his father’s death; falling in love with his wife and the birth of their three children; why his faith was challenged; and how he has been able to redefine his relationship with God, reinvent his career, and reaffirm his unyielding love for his family.

Juanes writes, "This [book] is an expression of pure friendship and a sincere way of saying thanks to everyone who has supported my music over the years. It’s not my job to write books, Not in the least,…But I felt that if I really did this, it would be for you to learn who I truly am: who it is behind the songs you hear, Why I make the music I make, and why I think the way I think.”

With six solo albums to his credit and multi-platinum sales of over 16 million copies, Juanes is the world’s leading all-Spanish language rock artist. The Colombian superstar is also frequently recognized as one of the Spanish-speaking world’s leading social media voices with an online following of over 10 million fans. Juanes’ dedication as a global activist also extends far beyond his passionate lyrics and is seen in his wide ranging charitable work for his ownMi Sangre Foundation and as a co-founder of the "Paz sin Fronteras" (Peace Without Borders) organization - which utilizes music to unite populaces regardless of political or geographic divides and advocates that all people are entitled to the basic human right of peace.

His most recent release, JUANES MTV Unplugged” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Latin Albums” chart and in 18 countries throughout Latin America. The album’s first single “La Señal” likewise reached #1 on the “Hot Latin Songs” chart, giving Juanes the 8th #1 song of his career. In November, “JUANES MTV Unplugged” WON this year’s LATIN GRAMMY awards for ALBUM OF THE YEAR & BEST LONG FORM MUSIC VIDEO – giving Juanes an impressive career total of 19 LATIN GRAMMYS, more than any other solo artist. The accolades for the album have continued, as Juanes recently won this year’s GRAMMY for “Best Latin Pop Artist” and was the only Latin artist to perform on both The Grammy Award broadcast, and the MusiCares tribute to Bruce Springsteen. Following the release of “Chasing The Sun,” Juanes will bring his critically praised “Loud & Unplugged Tour” to venues across the United States in May & June.

In this exclusive excerpt from his upcoming memoir, Chasing the Sun, out April 2, Juanes writes about how his discovery of heavy metal music helped soothe his fears as a teenager growing up in the middle of a drug war in his native country and how that bloodshed influenced his sociopolitical songs”

“By the time I started playing with Ekhymosis, the violence in Colombia— and especially in Medellín—was in full swing. The drug cartels had publicly declared war on the police, the military and the establishment at large. Colombia was in a constant state of threat; bombs were exploding every night and people were being murdered in droves. Clearly, all this affected the way we thought, composed music and lived in that city. We painted our canvas with brusque strokes. Even if we wanted to create a butterfly, it was impossible to ignore the patently hostile environment in which we lived. In our lyrics, we sang about what we didn’t understand, we asked questions, we vented our pain and frustration. Slowly but surely, music was becoming at once a powerful means of expression and a means of escape. We clung to it as if our lives depended on it, and we gave it everything we had, back then and still today.

One night when I was 17 years old, I went with several friends from school out to Casa Verde, a bar in an old colonial house located atop one of the many hills that dotted the El Poblado neighborhood. We sat down, placed our orders, and when the waiter returned to our table with the drinks, he suddenly said, his voice on high alert, “Get out of here—go home as fast as you can . . . There was a mass murder at another bar just around the corner.” Terrified and confused, we all ran home. A couple of hours later, the news broke on radio, TV and in the papers, and the entire country bore witness to that macabre night I’ll never forget. The newspaper lead read: On June 29, 1990, several armed men disguised as police entered the Oporto Bar shouting threats. They forced the patrons to lie facedown on the floor before shooting them point-blank in the head.

That night, 19 kids were gunned down in cold blood. Among them was a young man named Camilo—a friend from school we’d affectionately nicknamed Conavi. I’d even given him some guitar lessons. I woke up the next day hoping the events of the previous night were just a dream —a nightmare. The whole country was stunned by such a barbaric act, and I still couldn’t believe it was true. I picked up the phone and dialed Camilo’s number. Just as I had, Camilo had gone to a bar the night before to spend some time with friends. And now he was dead. I just couldn’t bring myself to believe it. I felt in my heart that if I called him, he’d answer the phone and everything would be okay. The housekeeper picked up on the other end. “Hey, could you pass the phone to Camilo, please?” She replied, sobbing, “No, Juan . . .Camilo’s dead. They killed him last night in Oporto.” And that’s when I finally came to terms with the fact that my friend was dead and that this nightmare was very real”

GRAMMY WINNING MUSIC SUPERSTAR JUANES’ MEMOIR TO BE PUBLISHED BY CELEBRA ON TUESDAY, APRIL 2ND

English- and Spanish-language editions, entitled Chasing The Sun & Persiguiendo el sol respectively, to be released simultaneously

Celebra, a division of Penguin Group (USA), will publish the first book from Colombian rock star Juanes on Tuesday, April 2nd, it was announced today by Celebra Publisher Raymond Garcia. English- and Spanish-language editions of the heavily anticipated and visually arresting photo-throughout, full color memoir—entitled Chasing the Sun and Persiguiendo el sol respectively—will be released simultaneously.

“I am incredibly honored to work with Juanes. He is truly one of the greatest rock musicians, soulful singer/songwriters, and selfless humanitarians of our time. In Chasing the Sun, Juanes transcends his music and opens up for the first time about the poignant experiences that shaped him as both an artist and a person.”– Raymond Garcia

Juanes’ dedication as a global activist also extends far beyond his passionate lyrics and is seen in his wide ranging charitable work for his own Mi Sangre Foundation and as a co-founder of the "Paz sin Fronteras" (Peace Without Borders) organization - which utilizes music to unite populaces regardless of political or geographic divides and advocates that all people are entitled to the basic human right of peace.

His most recent release, "JUANES MTV Unplugged” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Latin Albums” chart and in 18 countries throughout Latin America. The album’s first single “La Señal” likewise reached #1 on the “Hot Latin Songs” chart, giving Juanes the 8th #1 song of his career. Most recently, “JUANES MTV Unplugged” WON this year’s LATIN GRAMMY awards for ALBUM OF THE YEAR & BEST LONG FORM MUSIC VIDEO – giving Juanes an impressive career total of 19 LATIN GRAMMYS - more than any other solo artist. Now, with the album bringing Juanes another GRAMMY nomination as well, the appreciative musician has returned to the road to share this music directly with fans. The recently launched “Loud & Unplugged Tour” has already been praised as: “a brilliant and emotional unplugged performance that brings together 23 songs and more than two hours of dancing and celebration. …one of the best shows of the year”(Terra).

(Terra)

WHY: GRAMMY Camp, GRAMMY Camp — Jazz Session and GRAMMY Signature Schools are programs for U.S. high school students and high school music programs. They are part of the GRAMMY Foundation's GRAMMY in the Schools offerings and are supported in part by Best Buy, Converse, Ford Motor Company Fund, and the Starkey Hearing Foundation. The 2013 GRAMMY Camp application deadline is March 31, 2013. Financial assistance is available to qualified applicants. The deadline for the 2013 GRAMMY Camp — Jazz Session and GRAMMY Signature Schools programs is Oct. 22, 2013. Applications are available at www.grammyintheschools.com.

GRAMMY Camp offers selected high school students an interactive residential summer music experience. Focusing on all aspects of commercial music, this unique opportunity provides instruction by industry professionals in an immersive creative environment with cutting-edge technology in professional facilities. The program offers seven music career tracks: Audio Engineering; Concert Promotion/Production; Electronic Music Production; Marketing & Management, Music Journalism; Songwriting and a Performance Track for Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboard, Vocal, and Winds & Strings. All tracks culminate in media projects, recordings and/or showcase performances.

High school singers and instrumentalists can audition for the GRAMMY Camp — Jazz Session. Selectees will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the host city for the annual GRAMMY Awards, and students will participate in high-profile GRAMMY Week performances and recording sessions and will attend the GRAMMY telecast.

Just as the GRAMMY Award recognizes excellence in recording, the GRAMMY Signature Schools program recognizes top public high schools across the country for outstanding commitment to their music education programs. Each of the GRAMMY Signature Schools will receive a custom award and a monetary grant to benefit its music program.

The GRAMMY Foundation was established in 1989 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture — from the artistic and technical legends of the past to the still unimagined musical breakthroughs of future generations of music professionals. The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community as well as the general public. The Foundation works in partnership year-round with its founder, The Recording Academy®, to bring national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage. Starkey Hearing Foundation is striving to foster greater understanding among individuals and communities through hearing care by focusing on awareness, education, protection and treatment so the world may hear. Hearing loss affects one in 10 Americans, and 63 million children worldwide, yet many do not have access to the hearing devices that can help them. From 2000– 2010, Starkey Hearing Foundation fit more than 500,000 hearing aids to people in need in the United States and around the world. The foundation has grown that commitment to more than 100,000 hearing aids annually and is dedicated to fitting 1 million hearing aids this decade. In addition to giving the gift of hearing through worldwide hearing missions, Starkey Hearing Foundation promotes hearing health awareness through the Listen Carefully initiative and provides hearing instruments to low-income Americans through the Hear Now program.
