Los Chinchillos del Caribe is the first Cumbia Urbana and alternative rock group from Puerto Rico. Their sound is influenced by Manu Chao, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Damas Gratis, Celso Piña, Calle 13, Pibes Chorros, among others. The group was form in the students strike of the University of Puerto Rico in 2009. The band members used Luchador Masks during the strike to cover their identity while supporting the students. After that the band decided to start working in their music and live shows independently and that’s how they got the attention from Coors Light, Medalla Light and other brands that started booking the group for their festivals.
Musically the urban producer DJ Blass (Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Tego Calderon, De La Ghetto), noticed the group and asked them to work something together. Other producers and acts like Happy Colors, Elvis Crespo, El Dusty, The Julca Brothers, Toy Selectah had work or had shown interest in collaborating with the group.
